Once upon a time I started my very first blog. Although that one is retired, it was a wonderful learning experience and gave me the confidence to start the two sites that I manage today. Rather than filing all the old posts away, I’ve decided to bring a few back from the archives, including some titles from our Home Management Binder series – Home Inventory List. Enjoy!

The last few months, we’ve been adding and updating pages from our Home Management Binder. This month, we are working on our Home Inventory List. Whether it’s a fire, flood, or some other catastrophic event, there are times where you may lose some or all of your personal belongings. It is devastating for those who have to go through this and there aren’t many things you can do to prepare for it, but creating and maintaining a home inventory list can help.
Home Inventory List Basics
When you purchased your home and home insurance, one of the many choices that you had to make involved how much coverage you want for your home insurance policy. The two main coverage types involve the building, or dwelling, and the contents. Generally speaking, the building includes the cost to rebuild the structure (foundation, electrical, plumbing, etc.) while the contents coverage includes all of the stuff inside of the home (furniture, clothing, paintings, tools, and so forth).
If a catastrophic event were to take place or items were stolen from your house, the insurance company would expect you to furnish a detailed list of all of the belongings requested to be replaced. This list would preferably have the brand name, description of the item, date purchased, purchase price, and photo of the item.
When this type of event happens, it is very hard to put together a list from memory. That’s where a home inventory list comes in.
What is Included on a Home Inventory List?
A home inventory list covers everything that you would like replaced in the case of a catastrophic event. Creating a home inventory list from scratch can feel a little daunting at first. This is why we prefer to do it room by room. For a digital version, a simple spreadsheet would do the trick. Make sure when it’s complete that you store it in the cloud, Dropbox, or similar alternative and upload any relevant pictures.
If you prefer a physical copy, you are welcome to print out these sheets and customize them as you go. You can find the home inventory list pre-filled out version here and the blank version here. We would recommend having more than one copy and storing them in separate locations. A fireproof container or safe can also be helpful.
*Home Inventory List Tip – If you are in a situation where you need to evacuate and you do not have a home inventory list, go through each room and video record your home. This isn’t ideal, but if the worst case scenario happens, it will help you get your life back to normal.
