Introduction
Welcome to The Family Years – Across the USA – 50 States Unit Study! This FREE literature-based unit study combines Geography, Language Arts, and Social Studies to introduce students to all 50 states and U.S. territories. Designed for middle elementary aged students from 2nd grade through 4th grade, students will enjoy learning about each state through fun and engaging books, videos, recipes, and activities.
The unit study is designed to delve into one state per day. While the selected books review the states alphabetically, our unit study explores each state by region. Simple objectives for your student may include learning each state name and location within the United States, each state’s capital, and two-letter state abbreviation.
As with the other free homeschooling unit studies offered on our site, you are encouraged to go at your own pace, but a 4-day curriculum example is included with each section. At this pace, it will take approximately 13 – 14 weeks to complete.
Across the USA - 50 States Unit Study Textbooks
The Across the USA – 50 States Unit Study uses The 50 States by Gabrielle Balkan and Fun with 50 States activity book. If you would prefer a detailed atlas instead of an illustrated format, you can adapt the unit study by using the National Geographic Kids U.S. Atlas. We initially used both texts, but found the lessons to be too lengthy that way so I’d recommend picking your favorite and only using one.
For each state, we read through the 2-page spread in The 50 States book, reviewed the capital for the state, watched the coordinating video, and completed the activity. I’ve included some additional optional text and activity resources that you might find helpful should you want to add to this curriculum or make changes to it.
While we did stop using the National Geographic Kids Atlas mid-curriculum, we also added the Only in America: The Weird and Wonderful 50 States. Between The 50 States, activity book, and Weird and Wonderful, there were many things that were duplicated, but my student loves random trivial facts and this book has plenty of memorable items about each state!
Along with these resources, there are state specific read-aloud chapter books to further engage your students. These books can be purchased from the links below or check your local library for titles that you may not be interested in purchasing at this time.
The videos selected are from the Ask a Local collection by Visit the USA. These videos do a fantastic job capturing interesting places and things to do in each state. Parents should note, the videos are family-friendly, but not created for kids so popular areas like local restaurants, breweries, or wineries may be briefly shown. Whenever it comes to videos, we highly recommend watching the videos first to ensure that it is a good fit for your family.
We are excited that you have chosen to learn alongside us and hope you and your family enjoy your trip across the USA!
