Second Grade Read Aloud Chapter Books

Something magical happens around second grade. Attention spans begin to expand, and many children are ready for longer, slightly more complex storylines.

We’ve rounded up sixteen super read aloud chapter books for second grade. Our read aloud list includes both classic stories and newer titles. Several of the books are featured in our FREE Around the World unit study so if you are following that curriculum, these will fit right into your school year.

Ideal for all learning settings including in the classroom, homeschool, or at-home reading, children will relate to the lovable characters while exploring more difficult topics like homelessness (The Family Under the Bridge), getting along with a variety of personalities (Skunk and Badger, The Very, Very, Far North, and Secondhand Dogs), and bullying (The Hundred Dresses and Sled Dog School).

While this list was created with 2nd graders in mind, we believe that any child between the ages of 6 and 10 would enjoy these books.

As with our first grade read aloud collection, one of the best parts about these specific second grade read aloud chapter books is that most of the stories are the introductory books of the series. If your child is really enjoying a specific book or character, the fun doesn’t have to end. In our homeschool, we go off-list many times and read through an entire series before coming back to where we left off.

One important thing to note is that we only recommend books that we believe will be a happy addition to your classroom or home library. This is not just a directory that was put together based on online recommendations, AI, or a publisher’s book list. We have read every single book on this list in our own households (and almost every book in each of the series).

We hope these 2nd grade read aloud chapter books will be a wonderful addition in your classroom, homeschool, or home library!
